The Words Their Way program is based on the "sort". A sort is the process of grouping sounds, words, and pictures that represent words, into specific categories providing a hands on approach that encourages a close examination of the regularities and conventions of reading and spelling English. Sorts (lists) are based on spelling/phonics concepts and the sorting activities require the student to group a word with its rule and with other words that "behave" in the same way. For instance, in the book E, Sort 8 are words (and their roots) to which -ion is to be added and the additions require a spelling change.
The Words Their Way: Word Study in Action program corresponds to 5 developmental levels of spelling:
- LEVEL A Letter Name-Alphabetic
- LEVEL B Within Word Pattern
- LEVEL C Syllables and Affixes
- LEVEL D Middle-Late Syllables
- LEVEL E Derivational Relations.
Level A/1st Grade connects letters and syllables, focusing on word families, consonant digraphs, consonant blends, and short/long vowels.
